MidWest Fine Arts Services and Transportation Co. completed the relocations of the outdoor sculpture collection for Akron Art Museum as they prepared for the grand opening of their new wing. MidWest art handlers Andy and Keith Rock, working closely with Akron Art Museum Registrar Arnie Tunstall and his crew of handlers, along with MidWest F.A.S.T. equipment operator Tim Carney and Carney-McNicholas flat bed driver Dan Fernback worked two days to move the sculpture garden pieces that include objects by world known three dimensional artists Claus Oldenburg and Mark di Suvero. The relocation required elaborate rigging to manage heavy and out of balance parts to the disassembled pieces. The air-ride flat bed roll-back straight truck mostly used in CM’s portable storage business unit proved to be the perfect transport vehicle for the tight alleys and narrow streets in downtown Akron, Ohio. Installation of the artwork included positioning the pieces on to concrete pads and bolting them. MidWest routinely handles fine art objects and sculptures up to 6,000 pounds.
